Senior News Reporter
Shape the news agenda from Dubai with original reporting and analysis on Middle East oil, gas and commodity markets, building trusted sources and influencing industry debate.
We usually respond within a week
This is a senior position reporting and writing real-time news and analysis for our online news service (Argus Direct), our market reports and our business intelligence reports (BIRs).
Our news and analytical coverage from Dubai focuses on the Middle East region’s commodity markets, and most critically its position as a producer, exporter and trading and storage hub for crude oil, refined products, natural gas and other parts of the broader petroleum complex including LPG and petrochemicals. This coverage also extends to the region’s geopolitics, policymaking and regulatory environment insofar as it relates to oil, gas and other commodity markets.
This position involves contributing to that coverage through both diary and off-diary “enterprise” news reporting, and through insightful, original analysis, with specific coverage duties organized through an agreed “beat” focused on certain countries and geographies and/or certain commodity market themes.
This role will involve attending industry and market events around the region for the purposes both of coverage and of developing contacts; seeking interviews with relevant “newsmakers” such as CEOs and government ministers; and collaborating effectively with colleagues both locally and in other Argus offices.
It will also involve taking on a thought leadership and subject matter expert role to support Argus’ wider objectives with respect to areas such as marketing and conferences, e.g. appearing on Argus podcasts and webinars, representing Argus in media engagement or speaking at Argus conferences.
Key Responsibilities
Writing of real-time news and analysis for our Argus Direct online service and in-depth analytical features for our weekly business intelligence reports, with a focus on off-diary enterprise reporting and original forward-looking analysis.
Focus of coverage on Middle East oil, gas and other commodity markets and related policy, geopolitical, economic, industry and investment developments. This will include coverage of major output policy statements and decisions, but also a high degree of off-diary “inside track” reporting which will require the cultivation of a strong contact book of informed and reliable sources. Specific geographical/thematic beat to be determined.
Play role as a member of our “Opec team”, contributing to coverage of ministerial meetings and output policy discussions in between meetings, and contributing to our monthly Opec oil output survey, providing detailed and credible output estimates for key Opec producers.
Attend conferences and other industry/market events as required to provide news/analytical coverage and maintain and expand contact base.
Pursuit of interviews with key policymakers, executives and other “newsmakers” relevant to our Middle East oil, gas and commodity market coverage.
Use subject matter expertise to support our wider marketing and conference endeavours, e.g. via podcasts, webinars, media engagement, speaking at Argus conferences and forums.
Collaborate effectively with editorial and other colleagues locally and in other Argus offices.
