What will you be doing?
Argus is looking for a Reporter to join our team in Sydney, working with and closely supporting team editors across Asia. The ideal candidate is a resourceful, versatile and experienced business or commodities journalist who can quickly become a subject matter expert and lead coverage across iron ore, coking and thermal coal and nonferrous metals markets.
The role involves writing news and market analysis for Argus’ live news website, and daily, weekly, and monthly publications. It will also include developing market contacts to support commodity pricing teams in Asia and globally.
Experience analysing and dissecting data will be viewed favourably and you will have an inquisitive, detail-oriented perspective when it comes to markets and drivers of supply and demand. You will be a well-read reporter who keeps up with the latest media relating to these markets critical to Australia’s economic performance.
As part of your role, you will expand market contacts, applying the highest journalistic independence and integrity standards. There are opportunities to travel, attend industry events, present at industry conferences and lead webinar sessions.
This role will require a collaborative approach, working with team reporters and industry stakeholders to report on markets. It requires self-motivation and the initiative to drive projects forward with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
Intelligence, curiosity, writing ability, tenacity in developing contacts and a genuine desire to produce quality journalism are the primary qualities we look for in a diverse pool of candidates, with experience in commodities a bonus, but not essential.
Write daily news stories on developments in the Australian commodities sector, covering company reports and ASX releases, government policy documents, weather updates and relevant data releases from government agencies and corporations.
Write in-depth analyses and feature stories for daily, weekly and monthly publications, illuminating the latest developments in Australia for international readers.
Write accurately to Argus style.
Develop and maintain good rapport with critical sources to become a subject matter expert in the commodities market. Contribute pricing and market information to inform price assessments across Asia and globally.
Develop new contacts to aid with newsgathering and general market intelligence.
Attend and cover industry conferences in New South Wales and interstate.
Write insightful and well-researched market analyses with a strong focus on the use of data, including Argus’ pricing reports.
Contribute to white papers, webinars and blogs.
What we’re looking for in you
A strong bachelor degree preferably in Economics, Journalism, Communications, Business or relevant field.
An investigative mind and demonstrated excellence in writing, interviewing, and speaking skills.
Prior experience working in financial or commodities journalism across either print, online, radio or television is preferred.
Interest in and enthusiasm for commodities, energy markets, global business, politics, and economics.
Experience delivering breaking news, insightful market reports, and in-depth analytical articles is welcomed.
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
Strong experience with Microsoft Office Suite with experience in Excel and AI tools.
Excellent communication skills and phone manner, with the ability to network and build contacts with industry executives and market traders.
